Welcome To Our Site

The If I Can Help Somebody non-profit organization held its first meeting on August 30,2008 in Oakland , California. The purpose of the group is to collectively honor members of the community who have enriched the lives of others. The founder, Eric Pugh, came up with this idea after deciding to plan an appreciation for one of his favorite gospel vocalists. As the details for the event started to take shape, he began to think of other deserving persons who might be honored as well.
So, to help facilitate this work, Eric enlisted several friends to serve as board members and the group was formed.

Mission Statement

Honoring Individuals Who Have Enriched Lives

If I Can Help Somebody
A song written in 1945 by Alma Bazel Androzzo, made famous by Mahalia Jackson.

If I can help somebody, as I pass along,
If I can cheer somebody, with a word or song,
If I can show somebody, how they're travelling wrong,
Then my living shall not be in vain.

Chorus:
Then My living shall not be in vain,
Then my living shall not be in vain
If I can help somebody, as I pass along,
Then my living shall not be in vain.

If I can do my duty, as a good man ought,
If I can bring back beauty, to a world up wrought,
If I can spread love's message, as the Master taught,
Then my living shall not be in vain.
(Arranged and Performed by Lawrence Sumpter)
